NETWORK Workshop: Living and Witnessing to Racial Justice

A virtual series for leaders and volunteers in Youth, Young Adult, and Family & Children Ministries

Father Maurice J. Nutt, C.Ss.R. will examine the sin of racism in the church and society and offer insightful theological and practical ways of understanding race, racial justice, white supremacy, black suffering, and personal reconciliation and healing to begin the necessary process of dismantling racism within the church and society. This presentation will assist in our witnessing to a more humane and just world.

 

Fr. Maurice Nutt, C.Ss.R.

Redemptorist, Revival Preacher, Retreat Director, Writer & Lecturer

Redemptorist Father Maurice J. Nutt holds a doctorate degree in preaching from Aquinas Institute of Theology. He has served as pastor in parishes in St. Louis and Memphis. He is a nationally noted retreat, revival, and parish mission preacher. Father Maurice is a former director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, and a past convener of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. Father Maurice serves as a doctoral thesis advisor in the Doctor of Ministry degree program in preaching as well as senior consultant for the Black preaching track in the Academy for the Mastery of Preaching at Aquinas Institute of Theology. He wrote an award-winning biography of his mentor, Sister Thea Bowman, FSPA, titled, Thea Bowman: Faithful and Free (Liturgical Press), and Down Deep in My Soul: An African American Catholic Theology of Preaching (Orbis Books). His latest book co-edited with Greg Heille, O.P, and Deborah Wilhem is Preaching Racial Justice (Orbis Books). Father Nutt is a member of the Redemptorists’ Denver Province Extraordinary Provincial Council and serves as a consultant of the cause for canonization of Sister Thea Bowman, FSPA, for the Diocese of Jackson. Father Maurice founded Copiosa Care, a Redemptorist Spiritual Direction ministry in February 2021. In 2023, Father Nutt was appointed interim director of the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. He was inducted into the 2022 Class of the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Father Maurice is a proud life-member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He serves as the local superior of the Redemptorist community in New Orleans.
